The animated TV series Voltron first hit screens in the US in 1984 and has been captivating kids’ imaginations ever since. With the 2015 DreamWorks movie Voltron: Defender of the Universe, the popularity of Voltron toys grew even more, with a new generation of fans. How to Choose a Voltron Toy
Voltron toys are not your average childhood toy; unless that child has parents with extremely deep pockets! These toys are not cheap, but they are collectibles, and some limited originals are now worth over $1000. So, you could see a Voltron toy as a financial investment.
When looking to buy a collectible toy as an investment, it is important to remember this is a risk – and not all purchases will pay off.
However, at AvidToys, we’re primarily about the fun element, which has certainly been my main agenda when creating this guide.
I have looked into the best Voltron toys that can be played with and will hopefully fit into most people’s budgets. I have also looked for official products that are well made so that they should last a long time (maybe they’ll be an investment after all, or maybe just great fun to play with for the long haul).
My tips for selecting a Voltron toy are:

I have some general rules when it comes to choosing products to review, and this hasn’t changed for this guide. I came across thousands of Voltron toys and a fair few that piqued my interest. However, for me to take my research any further with any particular product, they had to meet the following criteria:

Most Voltron products are officially licensed, which should mean they’re well made. However, I wanted to know how and with what materials to ensure I recommended durable Voltron toys with good longevity. For the toy to make it into this guide, I had to be confident in its quality.

If I was in doubt about what to buy a Voltron fan, or I was shopping with a tighter budget, then I would absolutely go for the Funko Pop Voltron Collectible Figure.
This licensed collectible figure stands at 6-in tall and looks and feels exceptionally well made.
The Pop Voltron Collectible is very detailed and would make a beautiful ornament. I have compared it to a few Voltron Funko Pops and find this design to be the most intricate, with a superb paint job. At under $40, it is suitable as a Volton toy but looks fantastic on display, too.
Some consumers mention a damaged box, but this isn’t the case for all. The lack of warranty concerns me, as this is unusual, but the thousands of positive reviews outweigh this. Overall, a top-quality Voltron gift for all ages.

If you’re looking for boys’ toys specifically, then the Voltron Sword is a safe bet. This super-fun officially licensed product is the perfect accompaniment to any Voltron or even robot costume, or great to hang on a wall as decoration.
I found the sword to be pretty hollow-sounding but reasonably sturdy and thicker than you may imagine. The colors are a little dull with faint metallic hues, and the handle is small.
At 27-in long, this sword is certainly not small, yet the blade is very blunt, which removes any danger factor. I rate this sword highly as a Volton toy for kids, wall decor, or fancy dress.

The Voltron Legendary Defender Action Figure Green Lion is one of five individual lions that together make the Voltron 30th Anniversary Collectors Action Figure. The green lion guards and protects, represents the power of nature and creates Voltrons shield (when used in connection with other lion figures).
The attention to detail here is pretty spectacular, although, given the price, this is what a consumer should expect. This isn’t a cheap Voltron toy. The Green Lion is around 7.5-in long and features twenty points of articulation. There is also a cannon projectile launcher, lion speeder, and pilot pidge.
Due to its small parts, this isn’t suitable for pre-school children. However, given the high price point, it is very much aimed at more serious collectors or careful toy players anyway.

If you have someone in your life who loves superhero figures, then they’re sure to want to get their hands on this incredible SUPER7 Voltron Defender of The Universe 7-Inch Action Figure.
According to many reviews, there have been some price changes, without any clue as to why; currently, it is coming up at $93 on Amazon, with one consumer saying they paid $50 and another saying $65. I understand prices change, but this much? Regardless, this doesn’t take away the fact that this is a super solid figure – possibly the most robust I have come across.
The paint job is superb, and it’s clear there’s been great attention to detail here. There’s good playability; although the figure doesn’t move or come apart, it feels good in the hand, and standing at 7-in, it’s taller than most in this category.

With sizes ranging from 4-years to 12-years, the Voltron Classic Costume is suitable for most ages. It is 100% polyester, durable and robust material for clothing, and perfect for costumes because it is also flexible, lightweight, and resistant to wrinkling.
The costume is an officially licensed product and has excellent coloring that is pretty fade-proof, according to multiple reviews. The attached hand mittens go over the fingers for warmth but leave the thumb free, allowing for good movement of the hands – think candy bowls on Halloween!
I like the included mask and think this feels superior to most. The price is great, and for a Voltron costume, this is one of the most fun-looking I have found.

Children reading books is beneficial to many key areas, but the effectiveness is truly boosted when the topics interest the child. The Voltron Legendary Defender Chapter Book Collection is a beautiful set of four books aimed at younger children and readers aged 5-9-years.
The stories are short and easy to digest, and the illustrations are awesome. The books arrive in a nice presentation box, and although expensive, they’re very well made and make a lovely collection.

Fourteen discs are included in the Voltron: Defender of the Universe – The Complete Original Series DVD, packed neatly in a protective case. Fans are delighted with this set, calling it a ‘real find’ and ‘perfect nostalgia.’ The discs are well packed, and although there are no bonus features, the audio and video are great.
I did find the price to be a little high, but when you factor in the near 50-hours of playtime, that’s a lot of entertainment – and that’s if you just watch them once!
A great DVD collection, perfect for the home of any Voltron or anime fan.

Question: Why Did Matchbox Lose the License for Voltron Toys?
Answer: Matchbox became the sole licensee of the Volton toy line in 1984. With that came the responsibility of importing the toys into the US and remodeling them to pass the safety regulations here. For example, lions’ teeth were made more rounded, and missiles were removed.
However, Matchbox wasn’t in charge for long and lost its license due to an unfortunate incident where cases of lead were found in the paint of some Voltron toys. It is important to note that this incident occurred in 1986 and that the Voltron toys in-store today have passed rigorous testing processes.
Question: Why Are There So Few Voltron Toys?
Answer: Compared to, say, Spiderman, the number of Voltron toys around today is pretty sparse. Having done some digging into this, the reason seems to be a worry of supply and demand – manufacturers don’t believe the audience is there.
Prototypes of new Voltron figures were on show at the New York Toy Fair in 2018, but these figures have not been released. The limited number possibly explains the high-end and fluctuating price of some Voltron toys.

I was super impressed with the purchasing options of the Voltron Retro Defender Rainbow Graphic T-Shirt, and while there are no girlie colors, the color choices are neutral, and I love the retro print. I found the price of the Voltron t-shirt to be standard for specific-themed clothing.
The Voltron Legendary Defender Action Figure Green Lion is one of five lions available to make up the Voltron 30th Anniversary Collectors Action Figure. Although expensive, I did like the accessories and features of this lion and the striking green color.
I found the SUPER7 Voltron Defender of The Universe 7-Inch Action Figure to be one of the most durable figures I have come across, but it seems to have a never-changing price that could either mean you’re paying over the odds or getting a bargain; depending on when you buy!
